I Think I'm a Groupie

I'm going to the They Might Be Giants concert tomorrow, and I just realized that this is at the very minimum, my seventh TMBG concert. If you are reading, They Might Be Giants, I'll be the drunk lady in the black tee-shirt with pet hair on it who shouts "WOOOOOO!" the loudest. Hello. Also, if I can put in a request?

I've seen them once, and we were practically arm's length from the stage. It was billed as a kids' concert but the grown-ups sure enjoyed themselves, singing plenty at the top of our lungs :D

Duuuuuuude. I am SO JEALOUS. I have hearted them since Birdhouse in Your Soul and one of the happiest developments of 2008 in our house was the release of Here Come the 1 2 3s. Which my boys now ADORE. Which has opened the door for the other TMBG cds to come tumbling out and back in my cd player. Woo-hoo!
Enjoy, enjoy, and I will think happy random thoughts for you tonight!

The first time I saw They Might Be Giants was in 1985 (I was 14!) at The Ritz in NYC. They opened for a Scottish garage band, APB, (who rock, by the way). TMBG's eponymous first album had not yet been released, but they were playing a lot in the East Village, and selling out small shows there, but they were NOT well received that night at the Ritz. They were completely booed off the stage! But they didn't leave! And my date and I were the only (literally, the only) people clapping for them - we loved them. We felt so smug when they became popular. Have a great time at the show! And get APB's album off Amazon, used, if you want to check it out - it's called Something To Believe In, and it's really a terrific album.

Most moms I know teach their kids to sing "Oh, Susannah" or "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" at the top of their lungs. Me? I taugh mine to sing the chorus from TMBG "Dead".
"Did a large procession wave their torches as my head fell in the basket? And is everybody dancing on the casket? Now it's over, I'm dead and I haven't done anything that I want. Or I'm still alive and there's nothing I want to do." They can blame me in therapy.

Such a great band! John was all hacked up on cough meds, and John sang really well. We went to HOB on the 13th, AND got to see them in the teensy studio at Clear Channel Orlando.

Very surreal experience, seeing guys with that much integrity/style singing in front of a giant AT&T logo.
