The Age of Realism

Caleb made his birthday wish list over the weekend. The third item on the list was $100. He paused. “No one’s going to give me a hundred dollars,” he said to himself. He crossed it out and wrote “nine dollars.”

Later, I took the list upstairs to email it to our relatives. He’d crossed out “nine dollars” and substituted it with “money.”

Because, really, who is he to restrict the generosity of his loved ones?

Do you think he chose nine dollars because he's turning nine? (or at least I think he is.) He is very smart to leave it open-ended. You never know, really.

Hello
I just wanted to comment that I completed the book over the weekend and very much enjoyed it. I was in the "zone" while I read it and it provided me with a lot of pleasure.

Too cute! Impressive that he realized $100 was not too realistic. :)

Just wait until they're 13 and have a clue about money. My daughter got invited to a birthday party and the invite said, no gift cards. The girl wanted money. Ugghh. We didn't grant her birthday wish. But relatives... that's a whole other ball game...bring on the cash grandma.

Ha. Love it! Oh, I can't believe he's NINE!

Katie, thanks so much for the kind words about the book!

I'm loving nine--there the capacity for logic, but he still considers $100 is an almost unimaginable sum of money for him to have.
